Television’s biggest night rarely rewards the unexpected. On Monday, September 14, it did. At the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, held at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles and broadcast on NBC and Peacock, Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay took six awards on the telecast, the most for any program that evening, including Outstanding Comedy Series, according to the Television Academy.
The Academy describes the series as “the comedy-horror hybrid about a haunted New England island community,” and its win came with a place in the record books: with 14 Emmys across this year’s ceremonies, Widow’s Bay broke the comedy-series record set last year by Apple TV’s The Studio, which had 13.
A night of firsts
The evening’s most singular achievement belonged to Matthew Rhys. He won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow’s Bay and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for Netflix’s The Beast in Me, as ABC News reported. The Television Academy notes that Rhys became “the first person to win two Emmys for leading performances in the same year.”
Widow’s Bay’s sweep extended through its ensemble and its makers. Kate O’Flynn won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (ABC7 and the Academy both list her), while the Academy’s recap also credits Stephen Root in the supporting actor category, Katie Dippold for comedy writing and Hiro Murai for comedy directing. According to the Academy, Murai is the first Asian director to win that directing award.
The ceremony was hosted by Mariska Hargitay, the first woman to host the Emmys in 15 years, since Jane Lynch in 2011, Global News reported.
Drama stays the course
If comedy delivered a newcomer, drama favored continuity. HBO Max’s The Pitt won Outstanding Drama Series, and Noah Wyle claimed his second consecutive Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series award for the hospital series, ABC News reported. Apple TV’s Pluribus tied The Pitt for the second-most wins of the night with two, per the Academy, including Rhea Seehorn’s win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, according to ABC News.
Allison Janney won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Netflix’s The Diplomat, and Jean Smart won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks, which ABC News counted as her fifth Emmy for Hacks.
Limited series, reality and late night
HBO Max’s DTF St. Louis was named Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, with its cast collecting both supporting prizes in the category: David Harbour and Linda Cardellini, NPR’s winners list shows. Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures won Outstanding Television Movie, Global News reported, and the Academy’s recap lists Sally Field as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for the film.
Two franchises extended their streaks. Peacock’s The Traitors won Outstanding Reality Competition Series for a third consecutive year, and CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert won Outstanding Variety Series for the second consecutive year, the Academy said. The Academy also presented Michael J. Fox with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award.

The results suggest an industry willing to reward genre ambition in comedy while holding steady in drama. A horror-inflected ensemble comedy setting an all-time comedy mark, a single actor winning in two lead categories and a medical procedural repeating at the top form a portrait of a medium still finding new shapes at its 78th ceremony. For viewers deciding what to watch this fall, the list offers an unusually clear map: Widow’s Bay, The Pitt and Pluribus were the programs the television industry chose to honor most on the night.
