The Return of the Sculpted Shoulder

The Return of the Sculpted Shoulder

A shoulder is never only a shoulder. It is a posture, an argument about how much space a body is allowed to take up, and for most of the last decade the answer has been: not much. Fluid, unstructured, apologetic tailoring has dominated so completely that its opposite began to look like costume.

This season, the opposite is back. Across the shows, the structured shoulder returned in a form that is sharper than the eighties revival that keeps threatening to arrive and never quite does — narrower, higher, cut closer to the neck.

The best versions are not nostalgic. They pair the built shoulder with a loose, almost careless trouser, so the effect reads as intention rather than armor.
