In New York, the month plays out less as a single event than as a citywide relay, from parade routes on Madison Avenue to a night market in Queens and a waterfront festival in Brooklyn.
On the streets
The parade season started early. Staten Island’s Mexican Independence Day Parade stepped off on September 13, according to New York City Tourism. The main event follows on Sunday, September 20, when the 32nd annual Mexican Day Parade steps off down Madison Avenue, later than similar celebrations in several other cities, Latin Times noted. NYC Tourism lists the route as running from Midtown East to Madison Square Park.
A week later, on September 27, the Queens Hispanic Day Parade takes over Jackson Heights, per the city’s tourism listings.
Food, music and a night out
- Queens Night Market, September 19: the market’s fall season opens behind the New York Hall of Science in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, according to the market, with a Hispanic Heritage Night, Latin Times reported. Now in its 11th season, it gathers more than 100 independent vendors selling food, art and merchandise, Saturdays from 4 p.m. to midnight.
- Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, September 16: a performance at Shapeshifter Lab with Ravi Coltrane, listed by NYC Tourism.
- Ballet Hispánico, September 19: the company performs at 92NY.
- WNBA Noche Latina, September 21: the New York Liberty host the Atlanta Dream, per Latin Times.
- Hispanic Heritage Waterfront Festival, September 27: art, music and food at the Brooklyn Army Terminal, according to NYC Tourism.
- Don Omar, October 10: the reggaetón artist plays Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Latin Times reported.
Getting there
The Queens Night Market is reachable by the 7 train to 111th Street, and its 11th season is sponsored by Citizens Bank and City Parks Foundation, the market says; its fall run continues on Saturdays through October 31, well past the end of the heritage month. The Brooklyn Army Terminal festival and the Jackson Heights parade share the same final Sunday of September, making September 27 a particularly full day.
Museums and libraries
Cultural institutions carry the month indoors. The New York Public Library is offering readings and family activities throughout the month, and the Hispanic Society Museum & Library on Audubon Terrace has tours, programs and exhibitions, NYC Tourism notes. On Museum Mile, El Museo del Barrio opened a retrospective of the Los Angeles artist Teddy Sandoval on September 10, as Latin Times highlighted.
How to approach the month
The breadth is the point. A single weekend can move from a Mexican parade in Manhattan to a night market in Queens to a waterfront festival in Brooklyn, a reminder that Hispanic Heritage Month in New York is not one culture but many, sharing a calendar.
