The Novel Everyone Will Argue About This Fall

The Novel Everyone Will Argue About This Fall

The safest thing a well-received debut can do is repeat itself. This one does the opposite, and the opening forty pages are so unlike anything in the first book that early readers have been split almost evenly on whether it works.

The plot, such as it is, concerns a family business, a disputed will, and a narrator who is unreliable in a way the novel refuses to resolve. It is funnier than it sounds and considerably less kind.

What will get argued about is the ending, which withholds the one piece of information the entire book has been organized around withholding, and then simply stops.
